FAQ: Gas or Diesel? Economy and Connection Questions

1. Do I need special permits to install a gas generator?

Yes, unlike diesel, a gas generator is gas-consuming equipment. For its legal installation, it is necessary to obtain Technical Conditions (TC) from the local gas service and make changes to the gas supply project of the enterprise. This can be daunting, but Darex engineers prepare the full technical part of the project, which significantly speeds up the approval process. 2. Is gas really cheaper than diesel? What is the cost of 1 kW?

The difference is colossal. When running on natural (mains) gas, the cost of 1 kW of electricity is 2.5–3 times lower than on diesel. If a diesel kW costs conditionally 12-15 UAH (depends on fuel price), then gas is about 4-5 UAH. For an enterprise consuming 100 kW/h, this saves millions of hryvnias per year. The payback period for a gas station with constant operation is only 12–18 months.

3. What is cogeneration and how to get free heating?

A gas piston engine gets very hot. In a conventional station, this heat is simply thrown into the atmosphere by a radiator. In a cogeneration unit (CHP), we install heat exchangers that remove heat from the engine jacket and exhaust gases. For every 1 kW of electricity, you get about 1.2 kW of thermal energy for free (hot water 90°C). This heat can be used to heat a workshop, a greenhouse, or heat water for hot water supply, making the station’s efficiency close to 90%.

4. Will the generator work if the gas pressure in the pipe drops in winter?

This is a common problem with Ukrainian gas networks. Imported gas stations are sensitive to pressure and can go into error. We know this specificity, so during design, we measure the pressure at your facility. If there are risks of drawdown, we equip the system with a gas booster (compressor), which increases and stabilizes the gas pressure before feeding it into the engine, guaranteeing uninterrupted operation.

5. Can I switch the generator from mains gas to propane (LPG) if the pipe is cut off?

Most industrial gas engines can run on both methane (mains) and propane (tank). However, this requires reconfiguration of the fuel map and, sometimes, replacement of the mixer. There is usually no instant “button” switching; this is a service procedure taking several hours. We recommend deciding on the main type of fuel in advance, but having the possibility of reconfiguration as a plan “B”.
